BHUBANESWAR: The solar street lighting project in Bhubaneswar is likely to be delayed further as the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Tuesday expressed its inability to allot land to the Orissa Renewable Energy Development Agency (Oreda) at the proposed site near Unit-8 Boys' High School for setting up a solar photovoltaic (SPV) power plant. The BMC, instead, has requested the director of estates to allot land near Orissa University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT). Solar lighting will be installed on the stretch between OUAT and Delta square for which Oreda had sought land from BMC. "Since BMC is the user of solar lights, it has to provide us land to set up the plant which will facilitate the lighting," said deputy director, Oreda, B K Swain. He said they had sought 600 sq metre land for installing solar panel and batteries. A BMC official said they had no piece of land at the proposed place. "We are hopeful that Oreda will be provided land soon," said the official. OREDA is the nodal agency for technical assistance for solar lighting and BMC would provide the required support. The solar lights on the proposed stretch would cost about Rs 1.14 crore. The Union ministry of new and renewable energy (MNRE) will give 30% of the project cost, sources said. The BMC in 2011 was included in the MNRE's 'solar city' project, which will turn 60 cities across the country into solar cities. "The solar powered streetlight was planned by BMC. It is supported by the science and technology department and Oreda," BMC commissioner Sanjib Mishra said. At present, the BMC spends around Rs 5 crore on street lighting annually. Solar lights are expected to cut down on the expenses significantly. Earlier, the civic body had launched environment-friendly LED street lighting system in some parts of the city to cut down on energy expenses. BMC aims to convert at least 10% street lights into solar powered lights by 2020.
