How to Make a Solar Powered Walkway
I sure loves me some sun jars! They incorporate several of my favorite things to mess around with: LEDs, Solar panels, hot glue, man it's all there and they look great to boot! However, there is one big fat problem: the sun! When it's dark out, oftentimes the places I'd really like to have a little extra light are just the spots you can't leave a sun jar due to lack of direct exposure to sunlight. The obvious solution to this dilemma is to separate the solar panel from the sun jar. I extrapolated this a bit further and realized that the only thing you actually need in the jar is the LED, and since you don't have to cram all the other electronics in there, you don't have to stay with the classic sun jar shape. With this in mind, I combed craigslist for some suitably shaped glass blocks, went to Home Depot for the appropriate solar light, stocked up on speaker wire and came up with the Solar Powered Walkway!***UPDATE 5/5/10: If you build this project yourself, or something similar, post some pictures and I'll send you a patch!*******UPDATE 1-1-11 If you are the first person to post a picture of your completed light-up walkway to the comments, I've got a 3 month pro membership to instructables that's all yours!Here is the little path that goes from my driveway to the front door. I decided this was the best place to put the lights, mostly because Iwouldn't have to move a bunch of concrete, but also because I'd get to walk the path each night when I came home from work. I figured I'd put one of the glass blocks in the path first just to see how it would look during the day. I dug a little hole, just a bit deeper than the end result would be. I poured a little fine gravel into the bottom of the hole, so you wouldn't just be looking at dirt through the glass. I filled it back in around the block, and left the top just a bit higher than the surrounding gravel, as I figured it would settle out a bit. Everyone who saw it thought it looked nice, so it was off to the next step.I found these awesome solar lights designed to clip on to a patio umbrella at Home Depot for about 8 bucks. I decided to go with these because the solar panel was separable and the batteries drove six separate LEDs. If I'd used the standard solar lights it would have meant six little solar panels and a lot more wires running around. I separated the solar panel from the battery/circuit board case and extended the wires that connected them. The panel went on my roof just over the front door (see picture) and the battery case went under my newspaper box, with wires running discreetly along the corners and the edge of the window. ****Edit 1/30/10: It has been brought to my attention that this type of light is no longer available, at least for less than $60 each anyway! One button turns the lights on and off and the other button cycles through the various light modes. There is a good selection of modes and each one looks really good. They look great wrapped around trellises or run along fencing. They add a nice bit of pernach to the garden and look just great. Really happy with them. Opened the box , all well , turned them on, all good. When I would put them in place on my garden fence I Used the two screws supplied from the box. This was when my problems started, despite hand screwing the screws in the bracket meant to hold the solar panel mounting snapped in half I did however manage to fix it to the fence using one screw and some adhesive. When I had finished putting them on the fence I tried to test them again only to find that did not work the reason for this I found to be that the protective coating which covers the wire which supplies the power to the bulbs was actually broken in several places it has a consistency not unlike tissue paper , Very very thin. Have tried several times now to repair the damaged wiring hoping I could perhaps to get them to work but to no avail ,do not see any point in sending them back I will only receive the same ones this product is absolutely not fit for purpose! Seller had agreed to a replacement or refund , agreed to a different item . They are easy to install and are very bright. The lights are a decent size and come on a cable. There is an on/off button as well as a button which cycles through different settings. They come with a solar panel which needs to be put in sunlight. A great set of lights and would definitely recommend and purchase again. Solar power has been among the most exciting and promising renewable energy technologies of the past decade as panel efficiencies have improved, manufacturing costs have decreased, and people have realized its immense potential and ability to adapt to different environments and applications. However, solar energy is not without its naysayers who point out that "solar energy barely moves the needle in the U.S. energy mix." Such pessimism evokes the quote from Energy: A Human History regarding the Industrial Revolution, which states that the average Englishman: The Industrial Revolution was the most significant transformation in energy use in human history, so the idea that those living at the precipice of it did not recognize its significance is eye-opening. Perhaps the recent rise in solar power is only beginning to move the needle, but like the Industrial Revolution we are in fact at the foot of a similar solar power (and, more broadly, renewable energy) revolution in the United States. To test this idea, looking at the prevalence and growth trends of U.S. solar provides more than a handful of clues. Just as was done in my previous analysis of the U.S. energy mix, let's examine this evidence through five sets of maps and graphs. Important to note is that the data for these graphics comes from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) and their detailed state data for the U.S. electric power sector in 2017- and this data thus does not include residential and commercial solar setups, which account for about 1/3 of the country's total overall solar generation. This analysis focuses on utility-scale power to capture the applications most likely to displace fossil fuel baseload generation. Overall, the United States saw over 53 million megawatthours (MWh) of solar generation in the electric power sector in 2017, accounting for 1.3 per cent of total generation. To zoom in a bit, the following maps represent the total solar power generation in the electric power sector for each state. These maps reveal the wide range of penetrations solar power has made in the electric power sectors among various states. While California leads the nation by a wide margin at over 24 million MWh generated (more than four times the generation of second place North Carolina), eight different states exceeded 1 million MWh of solar generation in 2017. For reference, the average U.S. household consumes about 10,800 kilowatthours (kWh) per year- meaning 1 million MWh is enough to power almost 100,000 homes for a year. On a percentage basis, solar power accounted for 11.8 per cent of California's electric power sector and 10.9 per cent of Nevada's, the nation's leader in that regard. On the other end of the scale, though, 5 states had no solar generation by utilities in 2017 and another 14 states fell below 50,000 MWh of solar generation, accounting for quite a small portion of the energy mixes in those states. In terms of portion of the energy mix, 12 states saw solar power between 1 per cent and 6 per cent of their electricity in 2017 and another 36 falling below 1 per cent. The breakdown of where solar generation in the electric power sector is prevalent or not largely lines up with the following map, generated by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, that displays the strength and prevalence of solar irradiance (a proxy for how much sunlight hits a region during an average day and thus how much potential solar power could be generated): The miniscule solar generation totals of certain regions are the numbers solar pessimists are seeing when pointing out the supposed non-viability of solar as a national energy solution (while ignoring the massive generation in California and other U.S. leading states). But like the Englishmen who failed to see how the nascent steam engine was about to change the world, these critics are only seeing part of the story. 2. Identifying age of solar power in each state A chief aspect of electric power sector solar generation that too often gets overlooked is how young the industry is in most of the United States. To demonstrate that idea, the below map highlights when each state first saw solar generation contribute to the electric power sector, while the graph below the map shows the annual growth in number of states with solar generation and overall U.S. solar generation. The important takeaway here is how starting in 1990 (when EIA data on the state-by-state electric power sector is first available), only three states had any utilities with solar generation. From then through 2007, that figure remained below five states. The fact that solar did not account for a significant portion of the U.S. energy mix through then should thus come as no surprise. In the past decade, though, solar has expanded into about 4 new states per year, reaching a total of 45 states in 2017. With that presence in new states came an increase in total generation that averaged about 61 per cent per year. That type of sustained growth is the harbinger of solar revolution, corroborated by further analysis of this data. 3. Comparing solar with other renewable energy sources in state electric power sectors Another telling approach to the solar data is comparing solar generation with other notable generation sources. While some states generate a majority of their electricity from a single fuel (such as Rhode Island's electricity sector being 92 per cent reliant on natural gas and West Virginia's 93 per cent on coal), most states rely more evenly on numerous energy sources. Solar power is not yet the greatest source of generation in any state, and as of 2008 (the first year in which at least 10 states had solar generation in their electric power sectors) solar was not even among the top two most prominent renewable energy sources in any state. But, as the following maps show, that has changed in the years since: Among the six renewable energy sources tracked in EIA's data (hydroelectric, wind, solar, geothermal, wood and wood derived fuels, and other biomass), solar power went from the least prevalent across the United States to the third most prominent (behind only hydroelectric and wind). Meanwhile, on a state-by-state basis, solar power went from: 41 states with no solar generation in 2008 to just 5 in 2017 1 state where solar was present but below all other renewable sources in 2008 to 0 in 2017 3 states where solar was the fifth most common renewable source in 2008 to 11 in 2017 4 states where solar was the fourth most common renewable source in 2008 to 16 in 2017 1 state where solar was the third most common renewable source in 2008 to 9 in 2017 0 states where solar was the second most common renewable source in 2008 to 7 in 2017 0 states where solar was the most common renewable source in 2008 to 3 in 2017 Given that 6 states rely on renewable energy generation sources for a majority of their electric power sector and 16 get at least a quarter of their total energy mix from renewables, solar's rise in the renewable ranks is telling. Renewable energy is becoming critical to the grids across the nation, and solar is an increasingly vital part of that push. 4. Analyzing absolute growth of the solar sector on a state-by-state basis In addition to seeing how solar power has grown in rank among renewable energy sources in each state, examining which states have seen their solar power grow most quickly in the electric power sector provides insights into different regions of the country. The top 45 states (excluding the 5 with no solar in 2017) in absolute generation growth over the past 5, 10, and 20 years can be ranked as follows: These different windows of time are typically useful to examining how trends have changed over the years, but what these three maps instead demonstrate is that the ranking of growth remains mostly uniform over the different time periods- 33 of the 45 states do not move more than three spots in the rankings between time periods. Two aspects of the solar growth in utilities factor into this trend: The early solar adopters got ahead of the learning curve by entering the market a decade or two before many other states (the top 4 states in growth over each of these time periods- Arizona, California, North Carolina, and Nevada- account for over two-thirds of total solar growth and were each among the first 10 states with electric power sector solar generation) which got the ball rolling early and kept them in the lead. Almost 92 per cent of solar generation growth in utilities across the nation has come online since 2012, so the states that added the most over that 5-year period are mathematically also the states that added the most over the 10-year and 20-year periods as well. These facts are compelling proof about the quite recent nature of solar growth and the further room solar still has to grow in the electric power sector. 5. Breaking down the top years for solar growth across the country The last evidence for the blossoming solar revolution comes in the following tables that demonstrate the most notable years of growth. Investigating the data on a state-by-state basis, the following table lists each instance when a state added more than one million MWh of solar generation to the electric power sector: Two notable takeaways jump out from this table: Across the country, seven unique states have had a year of such tremendous growth, which shows that the revolution is not restricted to just one or two states. Of the 14 times such growth has happened, 11 instances have occurred in the past two years and the other 3 happened since 2013, which shows that the most significant and important growth is happening today and such growth shows no signs of plateauing or dropping off. In the end, the discussed data and graphs tell a story quite different from those who knock the potential of solar power. Solar only really gained significance in the electric power sector of the United States in the past decade, with no presence in 46 states until 2008. These new markets and this quickly advancing growth is the story to watch- not just where solar generation is today but how quickly and recently it has ascended and will continue to grow. The technology is only improving and the costs are dropping. As those characteristics of solar continue to be refined, future generations will look back at these several years and wonder how we saw anything but potential for revolution in solar power. Powering your home via the light that literally falls from the sky is an interesting proposition for anyone looking to save money. On the other hand, how does one start in on something like this? If you’re like sunny Florida-based hacker Andres Leon, the system starts out innocently enough as a system to run Christmas lights and decorations, but morphs into something much more involved.His setup, in its current state, contains four solar panels at 100 watts each, and could potentially handle for two more. In order to convert power from the panels into usable electricity, he implements a system involving an MPPT (maximum power point tracking) controller to charge two 100 amp-hour deep-cycle batteries. An inverter then converts DC power from these batteries into usable AC power, switched on an off via an SSR (solid-state relay).Control and monitoring of the system is via a Raspberry Pi running Apache and MySQL. This allows him to see stats on the system, including temperature of the Raspberry Pi and batteries through a web interface. Depending on settings, the Pi can turn fans on and off to help control temperature, as well as the power SSR, controlled indirectly via a USB connection to an Arduino Duemilanove. Do not expect to see no insects at all after 10 minutes of turning the trap on, but rather a few days. The way a mosquito trap functions is unique and can be broken down into two parts. The first task is to lure mosquitoes to the trap by mimicking human activity in some capacity. Some traps try to replicate human movement in the visible and invisible light spectrum, create heat mimicking a human body, or excrete emissions to mimic human breath or sweat. The second task is to trap and kill the mosquito, which can be done through a suction machine or even with a net. A mosquito trap is useless if it can never lure mosquitoes to investigate it, which means it's important to understand how mosquitoes hunt for their targets. Only female mosquitoes bite for blood. They typically fly around 25 feet or lower from the ground, where they use a combination of their three sensory organs to find prey: Antennae detect carbon dioxide released from a person's breath and are also extremely sensitive to chemicals commonly produced by humans, including octanol which is a substance found in sweat. Compound Eyes are how mosquitoes see the world, and they are made of hundreds of tiny lenses designed to see movement. Their eyes can see an incredibly wide angle and are typically more useful for insects active during the day, which rely more on visual cues. Maxillary palpus is an organ located on the head of the mosquito and is heat sensitive. This is used to locate areas of heat, typically warm-blooded prey, and find the warmest areas of the body. These warm areas are usually where blood runs closest to the skin, making it one of the easiest points to draw blood from. Mosquito traps operate by taking advantage of mosquito's sensory abilities by tricking them, either by mimicking the smells of people or visual movement associated with people. There are a number of different methods that this is achieved, including traps that produce CO2, octanol, heat, light, or any combination of these. The goal is to lure the mosquito into the trap where they stay until they die. Effective placement is key for mosquito traps. This means traps need to be placed in shaded areas in between where mosquitoes come from and people gather since the insects will notice the traps first. Try a number of different places until you find the most effective location. It may also be worth experimenting with different attractants to see which is most effective. The end goal is that the combination of different attractants will lure mosquitoes to where the trap can be sprung. We've taken a look at all of the most common (and some less common) methods that mosquito traps use to lure their targets in. Keep in mind that not all mosquitoes are the same - extremely effective traps for one breed of mosquito may fall flat when used in another region, which is why many traps build in as much redundancy as possible by layering on multiple means of attracting mosquitoes. The benefit of most mosquito traps is that they do not depend on harsh and dangerous chemicals, which means they can be safe around children and pets. While propane-burning solutions can create heat and have an open flame, it still only releases CO2 which is a completely natural byproduct of breathing. Unlike pesticides or mosquito sprays which are scientifically proven to be toxic to people and pets, mosquito traps do not take a carpet-bombing approach to killing insects. Another side benefit is that because mosquito traps are specifically tailored to attract only biting insects, moths and bees are not affected at all. While different mosquito trap models and brands may vary, there are only a handful of different methods used to attract these biting insects. Lighting- These are traps that have light systems that flash at frequencies that are attractive to mosquitoes. Some models may flashlights that are visible to the naked eye whereas others may flash light that is invisible to people (ultraviolet light). Lighting as an attractant is usually secondary to CO2, Heat, or Octenol. Lightning solutions usually occur right around the trap mechanism as a way to more accurately draw biting insects to where the trap is triggered. Octenol - Is one type of attractant lure used to pull in mosquitoes. Octenol was initially discovered in Africa as a byproduct of research into sleeping sickness in cows. Since mosquitoes are known to bite both cows and people, Octenol has been a means of fooling insects into traps ever since. Octenol is a chemical that has proven to be very attractive to mosquitoes, which means the release of Octenol from the device tends to draw in biting insects. Since most mosquitoes have very primitive visual senses, Octenol is one of the more effective ways to target a broad range of mosquitoes since they rely on scent and heat detection to find people. While Octenol does attract a variety of biting insects and mosquitoes, it's effectiveness varies among the different species of mosquitoes. The EPA fact sheet reports that octenol is not harmful to humans and the environment. Octenol is recommended for use in northern states. Lurex - Lurex is a mix that contains lactic acid and another substance, and it is specifically formulated to attract Asian tiger mosquitos. This breed of mosquito is more common in southern states. CO2 Systems - Mosquitos are extremely attracted to human breath, of which CO2 is a large component. Most CO2 systems function by burning propane steadily over time, which releases CO2. CO2 systems fool insects into recognizing these emissions as human breath and they the CO2 emission is typically only one part of an overall approach to lure biting insects into the trap. Propane Systems - One of the most common methods of generating CO2 is through burning propane, supplied through propane tanks. Keep in mind that propane tanks do not have an infinite amount of fuel, which means that replacing propane tanks will become a regular part of maintaining this solution. In addition, since propane CO2 solutions involve burning gas, it is intended only for outdoor use. Under no circumstances should a propane-burning mosquito trap be brought indoors. Heat Systems - Perhaps one of the most common forms of attracting mosquitoes, many models have a way to generate heat which replicates the temperature of the human body. This is commonly achieved through propane, which is heated to generate CO2 The heat source is typically located very close to the trap intake system. Heat and CO2 systems are commonly found together on systems that use propane. The luring system in the world is no use if the mosquitoes are not captured and removed from the area. The second stage of mosquito traps is how mosquitoes are captured - there are a number of different methods. They all work well, but some may be more energy intensive or noisier. Vacuum Trap - A vacuum trap describes the means that mosquitoes are captured and held, not necessarily how they are lured to the trap in the first place. These traps use a silent vacuum to suck bugs into the chamber, where they become dehydrated over time until they die. The benefit of vacuum traps is that they do not typically use chemicals to kill off insects, meaning that they are non-toxic and can be used around pets and children. Fan Trap - Much like a vacuum trap, a fan trap is a means of capturing and holding mosquitoes. Unlike a vacuum trap, however, fan traps can be made at home with some do-it-yourself skills. At a high level, fan traps exert enormous air pressure of an area that sucks the insect into a space where it cannot escape. The drawback to fan traps is that they often run much louder than vacuum traps and can cause air flow in areas that may not be desired. A much more powerful solution, it is a more indiscriminate when it comes to killing flying insects so it could suck in other unintended guests as well. Outdoor mosquito fans are a clean and powerful way of eliminating biting insects. Since they do not require any pesticides or harmful chemicals, they are safe around children and pets. Another benefit is that they do not extrude any strong scents. Electrical Grids - Electrical grids are a means of killing mosquitoes instantly. These types of mosquito killers typically have a tray where dead mosquitoes fall, making it one of the easiest traps to clean and maintain. In addition, since it does not use harsh chemicals or pesticides to kill mosquitoes, it is more environmentally friendly and can also be used indoors to great effect! The drawback to electrical grids is partially implied in the name. First off, they require an electrical plug in order to function, which means the only locations they can be set up are limited by the length of your extension wire. In addition, the highly-charged surface can be very painful (and potentially dangerous) for children or pets that touch it. Fortunately, nearly all models have some sort of grid or protective barrier that makes it almost impossible to touch on accident. Important Considerations for the Best Mosquito Trap Phew, that was a lot of information on mosquito traps! Deciding which mosquito trap to purchase is a very detailed decision, but there are three high level points to keep in mind before you choose a trap. Attractants vary in effectiveness with different species. The effectiveness of mosquito traps depend greatly on how they attract mosquitoes. Some attractants work better than others, which means a CO2-based system may be ideal for one home but not for another. For best results, make sure that mosquitoes in your particular area respond well to one (or more) of the attractants of your desired trap. Maintenance is key. A trap will only work well if it is properly maintained, much like a car. For ease of maintenance, pick a trap that you can easily keep clean and in shape. If you have a strong background with electrical products, go for that! If you are more comfortable with fuel-based products, go with a fuel-dependent trap. Location matters. The area you place your trap can make a huge difference in results. Keep in mind that some traps are intended to only be used outdoors while others are made for indoors - make sure you do not put your trap in a location it's not built for. Make sure that your traps are also placed in a location that mosquitoes commonly travel through, not right in the midst of where people congregate! Mobility. Most mosquito traps are not mobile - they are heavy, require to be plugged in or need another type of external fuel source. There are, however, USB mosquito traps that can be charged and powered through a USB port! Most USB traps are lightweight and portable. However, USB mosquito traps draw much less power than other trap types which means the range of coverage will be much smaller.
