These are in no way expected to give much light, simply to mark an area or a little glow. Hence, why I used 8 of these jar lights along the front of our backyard Pergola.Perfect Mood Lighting for Parties, WEDDINGS, Patio Decor, or any outdoor venue!These lights can either be hung or placed on a table top.I came across an unopened box of 16 ounce large mouth Mason jars, rings, and lids. It has been many years since we have done a vegetable garden, so I knew these would not be used anytime soon for canning.After doing some searches on how I could re-purpose these mason jars I got the idea of a solar light/lantern.Now came the task for finding solar lights. In the past I had used some of those cheap solar path lights for my yard to illuminate a walkway. The older ones I had purchased were kind of bulky and not so attractive. But, they did last a couple seasons before replacing the factory batteries.Then I discovered a set available at both Harbor Freight and Rural King. Rural King had a much better price at only $19.98 for a set of ten. Harbor Freight is currently selling them for $34.99 a set. Not a very good price as they basically are a $2.00 light.Cost for this project for me was only $19.98 tax to make 10 lights since all I needed to purchase were the lights. Already had the box of jars, molding clay, hot glue, wire, and hooks.Tools: Limited number of tools needed for this project.Drill: Need drill to neatly drill holes in jar lids.Drill Bits: Depending on the lights you purchase and the light/switch configuration you will probably need 2 drill bits a little large than the light and switch diameter. For me I think I used 1/4 inch bit and a little larger.Wire Cutters: Used to cut the hanging wire.Hot Glue Gun and Glue: Used to glue solar light to lid. Use a liberal amount! May help in sealing out the rain.Hack Saw: Used to cut the light spikes down for the lanterns.Materials:Solar Lights: At time of this instructable only $19.98 for a set of 10. Great deal. And they look cool with the faux copper finish. Got them at Rural King.Mason Jars: My jars are 16 oz. wide mouth. You can probably find a box of 12 for about $10 or less.Copper Wire: I stripped out the grounding wire from 12 gauge romex and cut into about 9 inch lengths for each light.Screw Hooks: Used to hang lights from on my wood Pergola.Molding Clay: this was used as an after thought to add lights to some other hanging lanterns I have in the yard. My first thought was to use hot glue to mount the lights inside the lanterns, but the patina would not let the glue adhere.Chose these lights due to their copper finish and very small light/solar head as compared to other spike lights. Single LED is powered by one AAA battery.CHARGE (in the sun) and TEST LIGHTSMy 10 light set had one bad light unit. After taking it apart I discovered the battery was not making good contact. After some tweaking of that connection it worked just fine.Jars can be larger, but I would recommend no larger than pint size as anything larger would be overkill for the amount of light from the single LED in the light. Here you see the before and after of the jar lid for drilling. The spacing of holes for light and switch will be dependent on the model of light you purchase.The light units disassemble into three parts. Light head, Lens, and spike. For the jar lights all you need is the light head that includes solar panel, LED, battery, and switch.Keep the other parts for some other project. Spikes are a 6 inch metal tube.Get that glue gun hot and loaded. I use the short glue sticks and need about a 1/2 a glue stick per light.I used 9 inch 12 awg wire for hanging.Simply bend some angles and insert into hanger holes.Insert your light assembly into the jar ring.Screw it onto the jar.OH! Did you turn the solar light switch to ON?Assuming you have a charge in the battery...Make your environment dark and BAM! Light!FYI... After a full day charge in the sun the factory batteries hold about a 3 hour charge.My set has been running for about 3 weeks. In the past couple days we had some substantial rain and wind. About have the jars had collected 2 inches of rain water. Simple enough solution... unscrew the lid and empty the water.In addition to these jar lights I have 3 yard lanterns. Occasionally we will throw a citronella candle in these to give some ambience to the yard. With a simple cut of the spikes on the light assemblies I installed lights into the lanterns. I cut the spikes to about 4 inches to allow sunlight to charge solar powered battery.The problem I had was how to mount the spike inside the lantern. At first I thought a big glob of hot glue would work. That idea failed quickly as the glue would not adhere to the patina metal bottom. Solution... big ball of molding clay my son had laying around that he bought at the local Dollar Store.NOTE: The spike tubes are very thing metal. For a clean cut use a hack saw slowly. Sawzall will rip through with a not so straight cut and pipe/tube cutters will just crush the tube.The lights have been operating nicely for about 3 weeks. Jars do collect some water with excessive rain conditions. Simply unscrew the jar and empty water. Hope somebody finds this useful.
12V LED Aluminum Garden Lights: 4 Steps (with Pictures)
I don't like those solar lights with low brightness and cheap materials that fade within few weeks. So I made my own LED garden lights to use in my drive way and backyard that are modern, elegant and cheap to make. Powered by 12V controlled from my alarm system which turns it on automatically at given hour, made from anodized aluminum. Parts for those lights cost about $3/piece.You need:You also need power supply to power it, but I'll not go into details here because each installation is different. I'm powering my lights with 12V 20W power source controlled with my alarm system. You can use a switch, light sensor, PIR sensor or whatever you like.Start with cutting each aluminum profile in half. That way you will end up with 6 pieces, 50cm each. Also make two holes about 3cm apart with 4,2mm drill. Best to choose the side that your previously cut. This side is going under the ground so if your cut is not clean you don't need to don't worry about it.The cheapest way to make sure that your light is installed securely in the ground is to equip it with an anchor. This will make the light more stable.I'm using 4x40 screws to create an anchor-like shape.Now cut LED strip into 15cm peaces. You can go for more but I decided that in my 50cm light only 30cm will be above the ground and only half of that will be glowing.Solder two wires to the strip, use shrink tube to make sure that moisture is not going to be a problem in the future, then stick the strips inside each aluminum profile and close the white milky cover.Now you need to connect lights to your power system and stick them in the ground.If you like it, you can vote for my project in top right corner of this page. Is A Solar Dyson Sphere Habitable?I am not a big fan of the spheres and I have no solution for the gravity issue, but I will make a fake answer to make some points about the energy issues that are really bit too long to be comments.Can be anything you want within upper and lower bounds set by engineering and the total energy of the star. There are lots more variables than trivial models assume since the structure of the sphere is realistically more complex. There is no one-to-one connection to the temperature of the inner shell. You can use insulation to make the outer shell cooler than the inner shell. You can use heat pumps powered by photoelectrics to make it hotter. Or more robustly simply connect it to hot areas of the inner shell. Yes, I said hot areas, there is no reason why areas of the inner shell must all have the same temperature. You can give different areas different albedo. Or simply link different areas on the inner surface to areas of variable size on the outer surface. If areas A and B on the inner surface have the same area but the outer shell radiator A is connected to has ten times the area of the radiator B is connected to, A will be cooler. The sphere is not, cannot be, made from homogeneous mass, it has structure. Since the temperatures of inner and outer shell are not directly linked, you can use insulation to make the sphere habitable at a distance higher than usual or cooling to make it habitable closer. So you do not need to worry about what the insolation or habitability of a planet at that radius would be. For example if the sphere is larger, you can replace parts of the inner surface with mirrors reflecting light to the inhabited parts. If smaller you might give the inhabited parts higher albedo, so that radiation is reflected to the uninhabited parts.There is no known way to get a comfortable gravity to the inner (or outer) surface. Nor should there be. a Dyson sphere is not a habitat, it is an energy collector. You should build your spin gravity habitats separately and just use the power collected by the sphere to power them. Or just use planets. Technology needed for a Dyson sphere should allow building planets. And the mass needed would allow building lots of them. Just because having six planets on the same orbit is not stable, does not mean you can not make it so. It would be easier than building a Dyson sphere. And making the planets habitable would be much easier. Like I said in the beginning this was not really an attempt to give an answer. Just some comments too long to fit into actual comments. Solar Energy to Light Villages | Patna News - Times of India
PATNA: The Bihar Renewable Energy Development Agency has proposed a Rs 1.08-crore plan for the lighting of villages located near the Indo-Nepal border in one district.The proposal has been made to the state home department under the Border Area Development Programme. The villages located in the inaccessible terrains are proposed to be lighted by the solar energy.The BREDA has prepared a plan in which each village is to have five solar street-light and 25 domestic solar home-light systems. The BREDA has been assigned the task to light up 68 villages in 13 blocks of Sitamarhi, East Champaran and Kishanganj districts.The blocks selected for the purpose include Raxaul, Aadapur, Bankatwa, Chhauradano and Ghorashan in East Champaran district. In Sitamarhi district the blocks of Parihar, Sursand, Majorganj, Bairgania and Sonbarsa have been identified. In Kishanganj district, Thakurganj, Didhalbaik and Tedhagach blocks have been identified for the purpose.According to this plan, in East Champaran district, where 25 villages near the Indo-Nepal border have been selected, 625 solar homelight systems at the rate of Rs 12,000 per piece are to be installed. Another 125 solar street lighting systems are to installed at the rate of Rs 27,000 per piece.Incidentally, altogether there are seven districts in the state which share the border with Nepal. The total cost of lighting these villages can run into around Rs 8 crore.Home department sources indicated the need for lighting up these villages for better patrolling by security forces. They stressed that during the night time, these villages and their adjoining areas prove to be ideal locations for hiding smuggled items, drugs and firearms.The Indo-Nepal border is considered sensitive due to increased Naxalite activities in the wake of the crackdown by the army on the Maoist.
